POEMS FROM SOMERSET

Children from Ansford Community School, Castle Carey, Somerset, were asked to write about ‘Our South West’.

THE South West

The South West

A most beautiful place

The country smell

The wind in the trees

The wild meadows

The beautiful landscapes

Our South West is great

SET UPON A HILL

In the centre of Somerset

Known across the country

People like to see it

Set upon a hill

In the town of Glastonbury

Separated from the normal level

People visit from afar

It costs no charge to see

Please don’t ruin it for us

Or for the Glastonbury Tor.

OUR South West

Enjoy the colours of our South West

The yellows, greens and blues

The clear blue rivers that flow to the sea

This is how South West should really be

But at the moment it’s one big mess

Blacks, browns and greys

Make it yellows, greens and blues

Until your dying day

OUR South West

The South West is in the corner of England

It is cold but sometimes can be very hot

There are trees and hills all

Around the area

But also busy towns, cities and villages

The areas that we live in are

Changing all the time.

OUR South West

Our South West, so beautiful

So calm, so peaceful

Countryside everywhere, animals

Grazing in the luscious grass

Fields for harvest, forever

Countryside cottages hidden in tranquility

From the rest of us.

Now why spoil this?

Why not live in harmony with the environment?

Instead of destroying it!

END OF THE WORLD

I have seen the sun rise and fall

I have seen the trees grow so tall

But only in a few years time

There will be no-one to write another rhyme

We will have to recycle and do it fast

Because at this rate nothing will last!

GREAT South West

Lots of people lots of cars and buildings

And nature which make up the great

South West a place where there’s

Peace and wildlife

A clean place but it can be destroyed

By pollution but can be stopped

By carefulness and there’s lots

Of places to see it is not a city

But a careful place.

South West

I love the breeze and beautiful scenes

The fruits and flowers and luscious greens

But there is another side to our South West

And from people's opinion it’s far from the best

But in the future I want tradition left

In our beautiful green South West

THE GLASS BALL

The South West

A Glass Ball we must protect!

Should we lock it away?

So nobody can touch it

Enjoy it

Experience it

Or should we leave it?

It’s someone else’s problem

Not ours!

Don’t worry if it gets dropped

It’s not our problem!

But aren’t we forgetting?

It’s OUR South West!!!

OUR South West

Walking in the country

Having lots of fun

Jumping in the puddle

Getting wetter everyone

Walking in the woodland

Watching all the deer

They all run and scatter

They know when I’m near

Lots of public footpaths

Which show you everything

The bees are busy

Must be careful they don’t sting.

OUR South West

Cider, cream and pasties!

Good westcountry fare

Never ending beaches

Sea, sand and fresh air

The wide-range of landscape

From the open spaced Dartmoor

To the deepest and darkest caves

Unique places to visit

The outrageous coastlines

Pounded by the sea

Take me there tomorrow

OUR South West!

OUR South West

The South West is separated

From the rest of the world

It’s nature’s finest

And shouldn’t be sold

Our long winding valleys

And never ending slopes

All merge together

To give us hope

But what else is there

For this rare beauty

When the land is used

So very quickly

CORTON BEACON

There is a hill called Corton Beacon

Right here in our South West

No smoke no fumes

Just you and the view

You can see afar

The trees the cars

The buildings that stand out from so far

It is a place to relax

And enjoy the beauty

Of unspoiled countryside
