BRISTOL AREA

City Surrounded by Countryside

The centre of Bristol is built on a series of hills which give unique views to the surrounding countryside. There are a number of city centre regeneration projects ongoing at the Harbourside and Temple Quay near the mainline station.

Pero's Bridge

Finn Delap

Pero's Bridge is a sculptural landmark in the Harbourside linking two sides of the dock. The photos were taken on the day the ‘horns’ arrived in October 1998. The horns themselves are used as counterweights to allow the bridge to open and boats to pass through.

Kelston Round Hill

James Harding

This is a high point of the landscape between Bristol and Bath and can be seen from many different viewpoints in the city – from the terraces in Montpelier to the top of Linden road in Henleaze. The photo is taken from Saltford.

Saltford – a poem

Penny Faulkner

A street of higgledy-piggledy houses

all squashed up

A grey snake protected

by green hills

A patchwork quilt of greens

With, just once, a splash of red and yellow

Like spilt powder paint.

And, in the Sunday silence of lie-ins,

A single bell plays its simple tune.

Roofscape

Richard Wood

A typical Bristol roofscape – showing the heritage of Georgian and Victorian buildings which dominate the centre of the city.

Shot at the end of the day this shows the special character of Bristol – the ability to see the surrounding countryside from houses built on the main hills of the city.

The Generation Earth Mural

Joanne Matthews

Penny Blackmore

Nailah Mears

Stokes Croft, an area not far from the main shopping centre of Bristol, has been brightened up with murals painted by a group of young people.

Clevedon Sunset

Hannah Boulton

A view that has inspired poets and artists for many years.
