Aim:To further understanding of the likely impacts of climate change on biodiversity in the South West and to highlight its essential role in adapting to climate change. To support partners and seek to influence regional policy and delivery plans to minimise the adverse effects of climate change on habitats and species. Lead contact: Tony Richardson (tony.richardson@rspb.org.uk) of the RSPB. Latest Progress ReportDuring 2010/11, the Climate SouthWest Biodiversity Sector Group worked with other biodiversity specialists in the South West on a project titled, 'Opportunities for enhancing biodiversity in a changing climate: the Exe catchment' (Project Exe). The project aims were:
On 5th November 2009, Climate SouthWest, Biodiversity South West, Natural England, Marine Biological Association and Marine Environmental Change Network jointly held a conference at the Met Office entitled 'A Changing Climate for Maritime Biodiversity: linking science to practice'. The event aimed to support action to help marine, coastal and estuarine biodiversity adapt to the impacts of a changing climate in the South West, by bringing together scientific evidence and examples of good adaptation practice. Details of the conference, including presentations and case studies, can be found on Biodiversity South West's website at: www.biodiversitysouthwest.org.uk/res_cc_c01.php. This conference followed a similar seminar held in October 2008 on Biodiversity and Climate Change Adaptation. Details of this seminar can also be found at www.biodiversitysouthwest.org.uk/res_cc_s01.html. The Climate SouthWest Biodiversity Sector Group have also developed a Biodiversity and Climate Change Glossary to help clarify some of the terms that are commonly used in reference to biodiversity and climate change adaptation. The glossary, available on the tools page of this website, includes a definition of each term, along with an example of relevant work that is taking place in the South West region.
