'Warming to the idea: building resilience to extreme weather and climate change in the South West' updates the summary report of a scoping study carried out in 2003, which summarised the impacts of climate change across a number of sectors in the South West. The updated publication incorporates the latest climate projections (UK Climate Projections 2009) and reflects current understanding of the key issues and adaptation opportunities for the South West.

'Warming to the Idea: building resilience to extreme weather and climate change in the South West' is sponsored by ENVEC (the South West's main conference on energy - environment - climate), www.oursouthwest.com, and South West Water. A limited number of hard copies are available on request from Climate SouthWest (contact details on the Climate SouthWest Home Page).

The original scoping study (dated January 2003 - see below to open contents) was initiated and supported by Climate SouthWest (previously known as the South West Climate Change Impacts Partnership - SWCCIP).

The study recognises the importance of the mitigation of climate change (reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases) as part of a wider sustainability agenda. Nevertheless, the explicit focus of this study is on adapting to the potential impacts of climate change.

The study forms part of the series of regional Scoping Studies undertaken across the United Kingdom under the auspices of the UK Climate Impacts Programme (UKCIP). The SW's report "Warming to the idea" was launched at special events (sponsored by the Environment Agency and the Government Office for the South West) that were held in Bristol and Plymouth in January 2003.
