Transport

See also the Slapton Line Partnership - community adaptation case study in the General Climate SouthWest Case Studies section above.

A case study is being conducted by postgraduate PhD student David Dawson into the potential effects of sea-level rise on the main South West railway line near Dawlish.

David has been awarded a GWR (Great Western Research) studentship, half-funded by the Regional Development Agency, and supported by Cornwall County Council, Devon County Council and Network Rail. He is supervised by Dr Roland Gehrels (University of Plymouth), assisted by Dr Jon Shaw and Alistair Hunt (University of Bath), The project will determine the impacts of sea-level rise on the West Country economy resulting from increased closure of the Exeter-Plymouth section of the London-Penzance railway line. The project aims to establish:

(1) scenarios of rail closure for the Dawlish / Teignmouth railway section for the 21st century in the light of future sea-level rise predictions;
(2) models of the socio-economic impacts on the West Country economy that result from various rail-closure scenarios;
(3) guidelines for local businesses and stake-holders; and
(4) advice for sustainable pro-active rail and governmental policy.
