| Background and status | A tall, handsome perennial up to 150cm tall. The long leaves, which often have wavy edges, are arranged in a spiral round the stem. The flowers are 2-3 cm across and consist of four rose-purple petals. The long capsules split to release numerous tiny plumed seeds by which the plant quickly spreads over large distances. It is conspicuous in clearings in woods or on wasteland and by colonising freshly burned ground has earned the name of fireweed. Flowers June-September. | ||
