Species Bass - Dicentrachus labrax, fish
Habitat ROCKY SEABED
Background and status Bass are up to 80cm long and are fast and efficient hunters often seen together in small shoals. Little is known about their populations, but commercial catches have declined in number over the past 20 years.
Main Threats Overfishing, poor management of nursery areas.
Conservation and targets Current fisheries policy is focused on protecting nursery areas (principaly estuaries where fishing is prohibited for all or part of the year), restrictions on certain types of fishing gear (gill and similar nets), limits on minimum landing sizes (applies to both commercial fishermen and anglers).
