Species Adonis blue - Lysandra bellargus, butterfly
Habitat CALCAREOUS GRASSLAND
Background and status There about 250 colonies of the Adonis blue butterfly in the UK, the majority of which are found in Dorset and Wiltshire. This species is protected under Schedule 5 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
Main Threats Habitat loss due to scrub encroachment and over or under grazing by rabbits and sheep
Conservation and targets

Maintain existing populations, concentrating on restoring suitable habitat in its current range, especially where there are large colonies

Increase the population (possibly with a view to restoring to the 1982 population by 2010)
