English Nature is the statutory service responsible for looking after England’s variety of wild plants and animals - the country’s biodiversity - and its geological interest.

Created in 1990 and funded by the government, we work with and through other people and organisations - in partnerships. These enable more people to become involved in more and better nature conservation and help these appreciate wildlife.

The Avon Wildlife Trust aims to protect, conserve and create wildlife habitats and to promote the awareness, enjoyment, appreciation and protection of local wildlife in all its forms.

The trust was formed in 1980 and since then has grown steadily to its current position:

Owns or manages 28 nature reserves

Employs 23 full or part time staff

Has 3100 members

Has over 400 active volunteers

Has a significant voice in planning and land use matters across the Avon area

Runs a schools education programme for over 4000 children each year

The Cornwall Wildlife Trust is the major organisation working for all aspects of wildlife conservation in the county, and is a member of the Wildlife Trusts. The Trust undertakes survey work, advises at all levels on conservation issues, acquires and manages land as nature reserves, provides educational services and raises awareness of the environment.

The Devon Wildlife Trust is the only independent organisation devoted solely to the conservation and care of wildlife and wild places throughout Devon. A registered charity DWT was established over 30 years ago and has a current membership of around 6,500.

Its aim is to safeguard the future of the county’s urban, rural and marine environment by:

Acquiring and managing important sites as nature reserves

Advising on the management of land in ways sensitive to the needs of wildlife

Increasing awareness of the beauty and fragility of Devon’s rich and varied natural habitat

Promoting the alure of the natural environment as an essential backdrop to our daily lives

The Dorset Wildlife Trust is the largest voluntary body concerned with nature conservation in the county. Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust is a countywide charity dedicated to campaigning

The Somerset Wildlife Trust is the county’s most influential environmental voluntary body. we are an independent local charity with over 8,000 adult members and part of the Wildlife Trusts’ national partnership.

We actively promote the interests of Somerset’s wildlife and countryside by:

Conserving wildlife directly, by owning or managing 70 nature reserves, roughly 3,500 acres

Influencing decisions on land use elsewhere by advice to landowners and statutory bodies.

Encouraging awareness of nature with wide ranging education programmes including schools, publications, talks, exhibitions, campaigns and field trips.

Wiltshire Wildlife Trust is Wiltshire's largest independent voluntary organisation concerned for wildlife and countryside. Founded in 1962, we aim to conserve and enhance wildlife habitats and threatened species by:

conserving wildlife through the management of over 47 nature reserves - over 1900 acres of Wiltshire's finest meadows, downland, woodland and fen,

protecting and enhancing wildlife in the wider countryside by influencing decisions on land use

encouraging greater awareness of the importance of biodiversity and changing attitudes through a wide ranging programme of education and campaigns.

The RSPB leads action for bird conservation by:

researching conservation issues and developing policies and practical actions to protect important wildlife habitats

informing and involving our million plus members in conservation issues

placing strong emphasis on youth and education

working with central and local government to create solutions to conservation problems

working with industry, landowners, the public and other conservation bodies to provide a better future for wildlife and the environment

buying and managing land as nature reserves

providing an advisory service on wildlife law enforcement.

In South West England the RSPB have over 100,000 members, more than 400 volunteers and up to 70 paid members of staff. They are responsible for eleven nature reserves and oversee a wide range of practical conservation work to ensure the protection of the regions special birdlife. They also work with many different communities and groups to raise awareness of, and build enthusiasm for, birds and wildlife in general.

The South West Regional Planning Conference covers constituent authorities in the South West region. All county councils, unitary, district and local councils, are represented in some way on Conference, either directly or via "County Forums". Membership.

The terms of reference of the South West Planning Conference are as follows:-

to provide a forum for discussion of regional planning and sustainability issues, the preparation of regional and sub-regional commentaries and recommendations on strategic guidance

to promote awareness of environmental opportunities and problems of the region through joint research and provision of information

to encourage co-ordination and consistency of planning policy among the constituent authorities, where appropriate

to initiate action, lobby and respond on behalf of the region to Government, and national and international organisations on planning matters

to assess the economic needs of the region, and to draw together economic strategies in participation with other key agencies and in the context of Europe 2000+

to liaise with neighbouring regional or sub-regional organisations on planning issues

to examine all aspects of regional transport issues.
