Discover the Countryside in Gloucestershire

With the Cotswolds, the Forest of Dean and the Wye Valley to choose from, it is hardly surprising that Gloucestershire is a natural choice for anyone interested in walking or cycling. The county boasts some of the finest "typically English" landscapes, and walking and cycling are the most environmentally friendly ways to Discover the Countryside.

With some 3000 miles of footpaths, bridleways and byways the county is an ideal place for walkers to get off the beaten track and explore some of its glorious countryside.

There are dozens of countryside and town trails, as well as the many long-distance paths, from the Cotswold Way and the Severn Way to the shorter Windrush Way.

Walking holidays are bookable through specialist agents and a range of guided walks are organised by the Cotswolds Countryside Service, National Trust and Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust.

Cycling helps you to travel greater distances but still stay in touch with the countryside. Gloucestershire has over 900 miles of minor roads, 1700 miles of unclassified roads and over 400 miles of bridleways and byways, along with forest tracks, old railway lines and canal towing paths. The County Council publishes a pack containing maps and directions for ten 30-mile circular routes, and many cycling companies conduct holidays in the county.
