Green Oak Barn
OUR SOUTH WEST
I feel that this project should be preserved into the next millennium and beyond as it is an example of a sustainable method of building.
All of the wood that was used to construct the barn was from local woods. All of the wood was destined to be pulped or used as firewood as it is wood from above the first branching of the tree. Most of the barn is made from green oak.
However the cross pieces in the roof (the ridge, purlins and wall plates) are made from local larch.
There was a barn on the site previously but it was dangerous and had to be taken down. The barn is in the grounds of a medieval court house and had to be in keeping with the house.
We selected the timber and milled it on site in the woods using a WoodMizer portable sawmill. We then cut all of the joints and erected the structure in place of the previous one.
Several different people helped at different stages of the project especially during the construction.
